𝓦𝓱𝓪𝓽 𝓲𝓼 𝓜𝓲𝓷𝓭𝓯𝓾𝓵 𝓑𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓽𝓱𝓲𝓷𝓰?
Most people think mindful breathing is just sitting quietly and breathing slowly, but if that is all you're doing, you're missing a crucial component - your 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐃! Without incorporating this step, you don't get any of the benefits. When you do something mindfully, you focus fully on every aspect of what you are doing. So, when mindful breathing, you focus all of your attention on the breath. Not just that you are breathing in and out, but feeling and visualizing the breath as it goes into your nose, down your throat. Feel your chest and then belly expand as your lungs fill with air, then visualize/feel the reverse process during the exhale. This process, if done right, makes it difficult for the mind to be in many places at once, because it gives the mind something specific to focus on. It also helps the practitioner to become more attuned/connected to their own body.
Practicing mindful breathing 𝓭𝓪𝓲𝓵𝔂 - even for one minute - has been proven to rewire the brain by increasing neural pathways. As a result, all the extra noise begins to quiet down, you develop increased space between stimulus and reaction time (therefore making it easier to think before you act), it can reduce anxiety, improve one's ability to perform executive functions, and so much more!

Executive dysfunction is cyclical. The inability for someone to hold information in their working memory can make it more difficult to visualize and synthesize that information, making planning and organizing more difficult. This can cause a person to struggle to see the bigger picture, but rather focus on all the details. Where those with strong EF skills see a task as a sum of parts, someone struggling with EF may simply see an overwhelming list of lots of little tasks, which can be STRESSFUL and overwhelming. Stress causes the brain to release cortisol (the stress hormone), which then, in turn, reduces brain function and makes executive functioning even harder!
Building your understanding of how your brain works and developing a toolbox of strategies that you practice regularly can help break this cycle!

My team member, Nadia Petrovic Lumbroso, and I had the honor of running a full-day professional development on Executive Functioning at The Oneness-Family Montessori School. We enjoyed learning about all the wonderful things their creative teachers were already doing to support their students in executive functioning and it was a pleasure working with them to deepen their understanding of EF and develop their skills further. We look forward to future opportunities to partner with Oneness and their families.

Everyone wants their kids to well and perform at their best. Kids want that for themselves too. When someone struggles though, how do we determine how best to help them thrive?

I came across this article today. While it's geared towards teachers integrating social-emotional learning into the classroom, it is easily applicable to parents at home. I especially love the suggestion to change the expectation that children apologize to having them ask "are you okay?" I have long believed that demanding an insincere apology was pointless as it removes all the meaning and emotion from those words. The intention is to teach empathy, but demanding an apology achieves the exact opposite. By having the child ask "are you okay," you are putting them in a position where they must tune in to the other person's feelings. I'm going to give it a try. If you do, please share how it goes with a comment below!

Now we have one of our tutors Morgan Franklin!
Morgan was born and raised in the Greater Washington, DC area. While earning a BS in Accounting at the University of Maryland, College Park, Morgan founded a weekly tutoring and mentoring program for at-risk high school students in Prince George’s County. After realizing that her true passion was in education, Morgan joined Teach for America and taught high school math for three years in Baltimore City. While there, Morgan earned an MS in Education from Johns Hopkins University and was awarded the Transformational Impact Distinction for her students’ dramatic academic growth. In addition, Morgan served as a school-based leader to Building STEPS, a Baltimore City college and career readiness program.
Since then, Morgan has transitioned to Wheaton High School of Montgomery County Public Schools as a math teacher. In this role, Morgan has led her students to achieve an average of 2 years of growth per academic year by developing and implementing culturally relevant lessons aligned with state curriculum standards. She is committed to providing every student that walks into her classroom with the specific resources they need to access the content.
Next is tutor Alice Dessauer!
Alice Dessauer has more than fifteen years' experience teaching and tutoring: schools abroad, special education schools in Maryland, Montgomery College, and teaching privately through tutoring agencies. As an adjunct professor at Montgomery College for thirteen years, she is experienced working in the classroom as well as with individuals in their homes. From adolescents to young adults preparing for college, Alice has mentored and encouraged students to perform at their highest levels of achievement. She holds a MA in Education from the University of Virginia, an associate degree from the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance from London, UK, and a CHES (Certified Health Education Specialist).
Up next is one of our tutors Amanda Sickel!
Amanda Sickel joins the tutoring team with over 5 years of experience with working with students and their families in multiple settings. She received her B.A. in Psychology from McDaniel College, and her M.A. in Applied Behavior Analysis from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Amanda has worked with children with learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder and other learning differences for many years. In her free time, Amanda enjoys spending time with family and friends, skiing, hiking and spending as much time as possible outside!
Over the next few weeks, we will be introducing all of our amazing staff! Up first is our very own owner, Elyse Dworin! Read more about her below!
Originally from New York, Elyse moved to the Washington, DC area in 2000 to begin her teaching career. After five years teaching in Montgomery County Public Schools she moved to The McLean School in Potomac where she taught middle school math and used innovative accommodations to help her students realize their true potential. She started Elevated Learning Solutions in 2018, where she now focuses all of her teaching energy. In addition to building in content-specific tips and tricks, Elyse teaches metacognition and integrates executive functioning and study skills into all lessons. Through her own journey learning to manage her ADHD, anxiety, and health, she has grown increasingly aware of the interconnectivity of the various parts of the body, the brain, what we do, what we eat, and the various types of stimuli we encounter. This awareness guides her teaching and her business practices. Elyse currently lives in Germantown with her husband and two young children.
